Objectives

To facilitate provision of face to face interpretation for appropriate patients

Scope

Critically  unwell children, children who have died, child protection cases

Audience

Consultants may access the contact numbers directly, staff in training require authority from the lead nurse on duty.

NHSGGC utilise a telephone interpreting service which can be available immediately.  However there is also a 24 hour face to face interpreting service.

Cases include:

  • All critically unwell children
  • All children who have died
  • All child protection cases
Access numbers
  • Between 8am and 6pm the face to face service can be accessed via 0141 347 8811*.
  • Out of hours the face to face service can be accessed via  0161 928 2533*.

*Consultants may access these numbers directly. Staff in training should first seek authorisation from the lead nurse on duty.

You will need the following information
  • Name and contact number of person the interpreter will be working with,  so the interpreting service can inform them of their time of arrival etc.
  • What language is required
  • Approximate length of time the service will be required, if known
  • What time you need the interpreter (including immediately)

DA Languages will arrange the interpreter, who will usually be on site within one hour OOH’s.  The interpreter should have ID on them.

No cost code is required – DA will contact the interpreting team the following day to arrange payment etc.

The interpreters have access to NHSGGC Occupational Health for support following a traumatic event.

Emergency Department / Out Of Hours   

In the first instance there is a BSL Chrome Book interpreting Service which runs 24/7.  This can be obtained via the Paediatric ED Reception Desk.
